Courses After Class 12: Options by Stream, With Entry Routes

Courses after Class 12 for PCM, PCB, Commerce, Humanities and any stream, with typical duration, subjects needed and official entry routes.

Quick answer

After Class 12, PCM students can apply for engineering, architecture, computer applications and the sciences. PCB students can apply for medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied health and life sciences. Commerce students can take B.Com, BBA, economics and professional accountancy routes. Humanities students can take BA programmes, law, psychology, liberal arts and media. Law, design, management, liberal arts, media, hospitality and teacher education are open to every stream, subject to institution rules.

How to read this page

  • Duration is typical. Many general degrees can now be three years (bachelor's) or four years (honours, or honours with research) under UGC guidelines [1]. Check each programme.
  • Subjects needed describes common requirements. Exact eligibility, including minimum marks, is set by each institution, regulator and entrance body. Always confirm on the official page.
  • Link type tells you how tightly the course connects to a specific career: locked (a qualification legally required to practise), directed (strongly points to one field) or open (leads to many fields). See Course vs Career.

Science with Mathematics (PCM)

Worked example (illustrative)

A fictional Class 10 student using this page backwards.

Tara is choosing her Class 11 stream. She's interested in law, psychology and possibly economics.

  • Law: open to any stream, so no constraint.
  • Psychology: open to any stream at most institutions.
  • Economics: many programmes need Mathematics at Class 12.

She takes Humanities with Mathematics, which keeps all three options open. Without Mathematics, economics would narrow considerably.

Common mistakes

  • Treating "typical" as guaranteed. Durations, eligibility and entry routes vary. Confirm each programme on its official page.
  • Assuming PCB students can't do anything outside medicine. Every any-stream option is open to them, as are life sciences and allied health.
  • Dropping Mathematics without checking. It's the subject most often required unexpectedly (economics, data, some design and architecture routes).
  • Forgetting the admission step after the test. JoSAA, MCC, state counselling and university portals such as DU's CSAS each need their own registration. See Career Guidance for Class 12.
  • Confusing a professional qualification with a degree. CA, CS and CMA are run by professional institutes. They're often taken alongside a degree, not instead of one.
